UK households throw away billions of crisp packets a year, almost all of them landfilled or incinerated because traditional plastic-aluminium film can’t be recycled.
After years of development, we built a new packet: standard paper, a biodegradable polymer resin called Hydropol, and a microscopic 30-nanometre layer of aluminium to keep the crisps fresh. It breaks down completely, no microplastics, and earned the official OPRL “I’m paper, recycle me” designation.
It also won the Gama Innovation Award for Packaging. We’d rather just see them in the recycling bin.

We make crisps the way you’d make them at home, if you had a fryer, twenty years of practice and a proper supply of British potatoes to work with. Here’s what that looks like.
We start with a high-solids, low-sugar British potato. The kind that fries pale and shatters rather than bends. Sliced fine on a single blade, washed once to take the surface starch off, never twice. That’s the curl, that’s the dry edge, that’s the bite.
Batch-cooked in small lots on a fryer that runs on renewable energy, generated on site from organic waste. Continuous-frying plants do thousands of kilos an hour. We don’t. Every batch curls, bubbles and finishes when the crisp is ready. Not when the clock says so.
Seasoning goes on while the crisp is still warm so it bonds, not dusts. Four flavours, each developed in our kitchen. Sea Salt is just potato and salt. Cheese & Onion uses real mature cheddar. Sweet Chilli isn’t sticky. Salt & Vinegar bites back.

We started as The London Crisp Co. Bright bags with the city skyline on them, sold through independents who wanted an alternative to the same six brands on every shelf. Vinnie Jones came on board and gave the range a flavour name: Salt & Vinnie-gar. It worked, and we got loud.
Then we outgrew London. Production moved to British farmland and renewable energy, the brand became The British Crisp Co., and the work pivoted from urban-cool to farm-to-bag. Same independent pubs, cafés and hotels distribute us, never the supermarkets, because we’d rather be in your local than in your trolley.
The paper packet landed in 2024, and the work continues.
